In 2003 I made my first visit to Africa, on what I expected to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip.
With a specialist tour company I travelled in the Eastern part of South Africa and Swaziland then flew to the Cape for a few days travelling up the West coast.
We had hoped for the spectacular blooming of the desert flowers in Namaqualand but sadly the rains were late and we had to make do with a hint of the splendour that often follows the rains.
My main interest was the birding, with all the variety of other wildlife to be found along the way. The plant life was equally fascinating and though not my primary interest brought some wonderful moments as we explored and photographed the delights on offer in this wonderful country.
